Traditional Safe Deposit Boxes Are Unsafe
Our Competitors have vault systems that put their customers at risk.
The below is from one of our Competitors customers at the time of this robbery.
At Gateway, we had experienced a suspicious scenario where a woman standing outside IBV was lifting her cellphone as though she was taking pictures of the bank vaults. It was only when I came home and realised that she must have been taking photographs of us in the car and sending to the guys to attack us.

But how does this happen?
The banks were historically the custodians of Safe Deposit Box vaults around the world. The reason for this, was that they were thought to be the safest place that the everyday person would have access to.
This was true for a long time.
Unfortunately, like all things, the world evolved and bank crimes became very sophisticated and more rampant. It was found that vaults crimes resulted, in most cases, from insider collusion. This means that the people in charge of securing your goods, were the ones colluding with criminals to steal them.
And with traditional safe deposit box system, this was easy enough to do. The employees of a safe deposit box facility had access to the vault when customers weren’t even there.
As a result, banks like ABSA, FNB, STANDARD BANK, NEDBANK, INVESTEC and all other South African banks, no longer offer Safe Deposit Boxes. They realised that the risks associated with Human Interaction, was the highest one that even they could not guard against.
So the banks SOLD all of their vault facilities to independent companies. However, the main risk was never addressed.
How can a security risk that the largest banks had, be addressed by an individual with far less resources available to him – the answer is that it can’t!
Minimum wage employees are still very much in charge of protecting your valuables in a traditional safe deposit box system. And still have access to your belongings.
A traditional safe deposit box vault system typically operates in the following way:
- You visit the facility (usually by appointment during their set trading hours)
- RISK SET TIMES means that criminals know where and when to watch
- You present your Identification Documentation and may even be verified through biometrics at a terminal managed by someone
- RISK EMPLOYEE knows who you are and most likely where you live. This information can easily be passed on to criminals
- You then follow an employee to your box and present your key, while the employee presents their key simultaneously
- RISK EMPLOYEE knows what you are carrying
- RISK KEY means that the same employee already has a key to partially unlock your safe deposit box
- You open the cubby hole door and remove your content box
- You then either make a deposit into your box or a make a withdrawal out of your box
- RISK EMPLOYEE knows whether you are removing or depositing items and can pass this information on to criminals.
- Then you place your box back in its cubby hole and you and the vault employee lock the door to the cubby
- You then exit
- RISK SECURITY AND CRIMINALS MONITORING YOU
That entire process creates large risk that you and your contents are not safe. Traditional safe deposit boxes are therefore no longer an option for you to store your valuables in.
A better and safer system is needed.
GUNNEBO – the world’s leader in Vault Manufacturing (every bank, casino, cash-in-transit facility – has a Gunnebo Vault already) created and perfected an automated system over the span of 40 years.
This system ensures that your valuables are kept in a non-exposed VAULT all the time. It also allows for you to retrieve your safe deposit box with zero human interaction.
The problem with this system is that it is EXTREMELY expensive to install. This is why the banks and independent safe deposit box facilities refused to invest in the revolutionary vault even though it would be SAFER for the client ultimately.
CAPITAL VAULTS however, took a long term view and spent the many millions required to bring this remarkable and SAFER vault to Durban. And together with Sun International – they have installed this advanced Vault at Sibaya Casino.
The reason a Casino was chosen as the venue for this SAFER vault, was because Casino’s provide many benefits that make a Safe Deposit Box Vault safer to use:
- 24/7/365 highly trained security
- More CCTV Cameras per square meter
- Camouflage (where no one knows that you’re actually going to a safe deposit box vault)
- Priority SAPS response in the event of a crime being perpetrated
- Single Entry and Exit points which ensure criminals can’t get in or out without being detected and contained
All of these benefits and more is why Capital Vaults has the Safer Safe Deposit Box and why you should keep your contents in one of our Vaults.
That’s A Safe Deposit Box With Capital Vaults Is Safer
Come see it for yourself today. There’s no obligation, but once you see it for yourself – you will understand why traditional safe deposit box facilities are simply not safe and why Capital Vaults has the SAFER Safe Deposit Box!
