Why South African Banks No Longer Offer Safe Deposit Boxes – And Why Capital Vaults Is the Safer Alternative

For decades, many South Africans trusted their banks to safeguard valuables through traditional safe deposit boxes. Major banks such as FNB, ABSA, Standard Bank, Nedbank and Capitec once offered these facilities as a premium security service.

However, today these banks no longer provide traditional safe deposit boxes. The reason is simple: the risks became too high.

Why Banks Phased Out Safe Deposit Boxes

Over the past decade, several high-profile vault robberies and security breaches exposed weaknesses in traditional bank vault systems. Criminal syndicates targeted bank vaults because they knew valuable items—cash, jewellery, documents, and precious metals—were stored inside.

One of the most widely reported incidents occurred at an FNB branch in Randburg in December 2016. Criminals tied up the security guard and used heavy equipment to break into the vault area, stealing 360 safety deposit boxes containing valuables belonging to clients. Many boxes were later recovered dumped and forced open, with jewellery and coins missing. You can read the business day report here.

Just two weeks later, another vault breach occurred at FNB’s Parktown branch, where thieves stole R1.7 million in cash and valuables from about 30 safety deposit boxes. This newspaper article can be found here.

Vault crimes are not new either. In another case, robbers drilled through the wall of a Standard Bank vault in Kuruman and stole multiple safety deposit boxes after gaining access to the facility. Read the full story here.

Following a series of such incidents, banks began reassessing the risk and cost of operating vault facilities. FNB ultimately stopped accepting new safe custody applications after the robberies, citing concerns about the sustainability and security of the service.

More recently, ABSA also announced that it would discontinue its safe deposit box service entirely, asking customers to retrieve their belongings before the facility closed.

These developments left many South Africans without a secure banking option for protecting their most valuable possessions.

The Security Problem with Traditional Vaults

Traditional bank vaults rely heavily on human-controlled access. Employees manage keys, locks, vault entry procedures, and surveillance systems. Unfortunately, many historical vault crimes involved insider knowledge or manipulation of physical systems.

Additionally, banks typically operate vault areas within branch buildings that are not specifically designed for private asset protection, which creates vulnerabilities compared with purpose-built high-security facilities.

A New Era of Security: Capital Vaults

This gap in the market led to the rise of specialised vault providers such as Capital Vaults.

Unlike traditional bank lockers, Capital Vaults uses fully automated vault technology designed to eliminate the risks associated with human handling and manual access systems.

The facility is located within the highly secure Sibaya Casino & Entertainment Kingdom compound, providing an additional layer of protection. Casino complexes are among the most heavily monitored environments in the country, with 24/7 surveillance, controlled entry points, and constant on-site security.

    Why Capital Vaults Is Safer

Capital Vaults offers several key advantages over traditional bank vaults:

    • Automated vault retrieval systems that remove human handling risks
    • Multi-layer biometric and access control technology
    • 24/7 monitored security within a casino compound
    • Discreet private viewing rooms for accessing valuables
    • Purpose-built infrastructure designed specifically for high-value asset protection

The Smart Choice for Protecting What Matters

As banks move away from providing safe deposit boxes due to security concerns and operational risk, South Africans are increasingly turning to dedicated vault providers.

Capital Vaults combines cutting-edge security technology, automated vault systems, and one of the most secure locations in the country to deliver peace of mind for individuals and businesses alike.

If you need a place to store jewellery, important documents, precious metals, or family heirlooms, the future of safe storage is no longer inside a traditional bank branch — it’s inside a specialised high-security vault designed for exactly that purpose.
